PNASD SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS 2016



Bryan Estepa

Bryan graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing from Southwestern College in May 2016 and will continue on to pursue his nursing career at Point Lorna Nazarene University for a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. His interest to become a nurse was influenced by her mother who is also a nurse in ICU at Kaiser and his experience as a pharmacy technician at the same place. He expressed a lot of passion for nursing and care for his patients. He aimed to join the military and become an officer in the Air Force. As a future nurse leader, his goal is to ensure patient safety, adhering to hospital policies and standards of care and implementing National patient Safety goals. Bryan was featured in the PNASD Heritage newsletter Student Profile page. He had been involved with various community service including health fair participated by PNASD.



Olivia Mayo

Olivia obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Health Care Policy and Spanish Studies at Mt. Saint Mary's University in Los Angeles, CA. currently she is enrolled in the Masters Entry Program in Nursing at the University of San Diego and is expected to graduate in 2017. She is presently working as a CNA at Sharp HealthCare. She expressed interest in becoming a nurse advocate for patients and make a difference in developing health care policies to improve patient outcome. As a clinical nurse leader, she aimed to reduce hospital acquired infections on ventilator patients in ICU by managing adequate oral care using various strategies.



Brenda Miguel Cruz

Brenda recently graduated with an Associate degree in Nursing from Southwestern College in May 2016. She will continue on to pursue her Bachelors of Science in Nursing at Point Loma Nazarene University. As a student she felt that she had accomplished a dream to become the first in her family to achieve a higher education and gave her more motivation to help others to do the same. Presently, she is working as a CNA at Sharp HealthCare. She volunteers with the Rosa Parks Health Office as an assistant to the school triage nurse in screening students with urgent care needs. As a future nurse leader, she believes that she can make a difference in her patient care by building a strong teamwork, trust and communication to ensure patient safety.



Jemimah Olivar

Jem graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing from Southwestern College in May 2016. She was recently accepted at Point Lorna Nazarene University in the Bachelor of Science Nursing Program. She had been an active participant in many PNASD activities such as the Making Strides Cancer Walk as a team leader last October 2015, community health fairs and first aid booth. She was appointed as a student administrator for the Integrative Therapy program at Sharp Hospital Chula Vista where she guides other students going through the experience. As a nurse leader, she feels that knowing how to keep balance between body, mind and spirit, set priorities and keeping things in perspectives will ensure safety of all patients and enables her to provide optimum care.



Hyacinth Pasco

Hyacinth obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at Centro Escolar University in Manila Philippines, came to USA and took the NCLEX exam and got her RN license. She is currently enrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at the United States University in Chula Vista. She works as a Nurse Manager at Eldorado Care Center, a skilled nursing and subacute care facility in El Cajon CA. Her goal is to achieve the highest level of education and make a difference in delivering safe practices through evidence based research. She supports a standard policy to implement safe nursing workload, policies regarding health care issues including cost effectiveness and access to health care.



Zayra Quintero

Zayra recently graduated from Southwestern College with an Associate Degree in Nursing in May 2016. She was accepted at Point Lorna Nazarene University for her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. As a student she found this profession as very fulfilling with lots of opportunities to diversify her nursing experience. She is highly motivated to pursue higher education, to set a role model for her children and other members of the family. As a future nurse leader, she aims to provide for her patients the highest level of patient safety, implement infection control, team collaboration and stressing positive patient out­ come. She expressed interest in providing patient focused care using the concept of body, mind and spirit through integrative therapy.



Eleanor Raymundo

Eleanor is currently a first year student in the Associate Degree Nursing program at Southwestern College. She developed interest in nursing by watching how her father who was ill with cancer was managed by other nurses. The nurses' compassion and commitment was a big influence in her choice to enter the nursing program. As a beginning nursing student, she kept an open mind to learn all the skills she needed to deliver quality care. Eleanor demonstrated academic and clinical excellence as evidenced by her grades and evaluations. She is very active in community service, had volunteered in community health fairs and first aids with PNASD. She is proud to say that she has a strong support from her family including her in laws. Her long term goal is to become an officer in the military and serve the United States of America, who opened up lots of opportunities for her and her family.



Britney Taganes

Britney obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Health Science from the University of Irvine and had worked as a health care educator at the Fresno Economic Commission in 2015. She's currently enrolled in the Masters Entry Program in nursing at the University of San Diego for her Master's Degree n nursing. She had been involved in numerous volunteer activities including serving with the PNASD community health fairs. As a future clinical nurse leader she needs to be equipped with advance training necessary to develop quality improvement strategies for patient care delivery. Her aim is to conduct evidence based research and use this knowledge to develop risk education strategies and save her patients.



Ariana Vargas

Ariana recently graduated in the Associate Nursing Program at Southwestern College in May 2016. She was accepted at San Diego State University Bachelors of Science in nursing program. Her goal is to complete her MSN degree and eventually become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She had been an active member of PNASD, participating in community fairs and running the first aid booth. Her experience in the preceptor program prepared her to become competent and confident and ready tofunction in the real world. Ariana demonstrated academic excellence, good work ethics and commitment to satisfactory patient outcome. As a future nurse leader, she aims to improve patient safety by learning about causes of errors and use this knowledge to design systems of care to make errors less common and less harmful.



Ian Velez

Ian recently graduated at Southwestern College and earned an Associate Degree in Nursing. She was accepted at San Diego State University to pursue Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Having to care for his ailing mother diagnosed with acute renal failure influenced his passion to make a difference in the lives of other patients with severe illness by pursuing a career in nursing. As a nursing student, he showed academic excellence, accountability and responsibility to succeed. He expanded his experience working as a CNA and volunteering in various community projects. As a future nurse leader, he identified workplace stress as a safety hazard. His goal to ensure patient safety through stress management, self-care management, and maintaining wellness and balance. His ultimate goal is to join the military and become an officer in the Air Force and serve the country that gave him opportunities to begin his career in nursing.
